The Lifewise Big Sleepout Rotorua

Kia ora, fans of Lifewise. After the immense success of our Auckland Big Sleepout, it’s time to get started in Rotorua!

On 5th September 2019, community members and leaders will come together and sleep rough for one night to support our Rotorua community.

Join us at Rotorua’s Village Green Pukuatua Street Carpark Building on the night of Thursday 5th September for a chance to experience “sleeping rough” in the middle of winter – it is truly humbling and eye-opening experience.

Due to the latest weather updates we have had to shift our event to the Pukuatua Street Carpark Building. (Yes we do care about you getting drenched in bad weather!)

This unique event could give you team building opportunities and a chance to bring about genuine social change. Past participants say a highlight was the informal networking overnight with some of the most courageous Kiwis you will ever meet – be they politicians, leaders of industry, up and coming entrepreneurs and social enterprise visionaries or people who have themselves experienced and conquered homelessness.

By “sleeping rough” for one night, and enjoying a hangi together, you can help support our most vulnerable community members and stamp out homelessness for good.

We are already trailblazing and leading the way with Housing First Rotorua and our award-winning Mental Health and Addictions Services.

But we can do so much more with your help! You can be part of the solution in a bold way, by stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the realisation that as Kiwis, we can all be just a couple of steps away from homelessness ourselves.

It doesn’t take much, but with a small step, this action by you could speak volumes. Spaces fill up fast, and it’s a life-changing event you won’t want to miss. Register today at www.bigsleepout.org.nz/rotorua

Rotorua Mayor joins business + community leaders to sleep rough in Rotorua

Rotorua Mayor Hon Steve Chadwick and Labour MP Tamati Coffey will join over 40 local business and community leaders to take part in 2019 Rotorua Lifewise Big Sleepout on Thursday 05th September 2019.

This will be the third time Lifewise Rotorua has hosted the event. The awareness-building and fundraising efforts of previous events have enabled Lifewise Rotorua to support people from the community out of homelessness.

Housing First Rotorua launched earlier this year, the program focuses on permanently housing individuals and families who experience homelessness and supporting them to remain housed in the long term. Since its inception six people have been successfully housed with ongoing wrap around support to ensure tenants can maintain their tenancies.

According to Haehaetu Barrett, Regional Manager of Lifewise Rotorua (Bay of Plenty), being able to support tenants with personalized wrap around services helps them sustain their tenancies, address health needs, and to achieve their goals.

It is estimated that there more than 50 people in Rotorua who have no place to call home.

“We need help to ensure we can keep the Housing First Rotorua program going, we need help.

“One of the biggest issues is finding suitable housing stock in Rotorua. We hope that Thursday’s event will not only raise much needed funds to ensure wrap around support for the homeless community but also encourage landlords to come forward with housing stock so we can ensure homelessness is brief rare and non-reoccurring,” says Barrett.
