A commitment worth making
This World Homeless Day, Lifewise is asking every political party in Aotearoa to commit to the same thing: making homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring. Not a slogan. A shared national goal backed by evidence of what actually works. Before you sign, take a few minutes to hear from our Chief Executive, Pam Elgar, on why we’re asking now – and what your name on this commitment means.
We know what ends this
Every night in Tāmaki Makaurau, people we know by name sleep in cars, in doorways, in places no one should have to call home. Not one or two. Hundreds of people. Behind every number is someone’s tama, someone’s māmā, someone’s koroua.
We know what ends this. Thirty years of international evidence points toward the same solution: permanent housing with wrap-around support that stays as long as it’s needed. Housing First at Lifewise isn’t theoretical. It’s what both our Housing First team and our peer outreach team does out of the Housing First Hub and Merge Cafe on Karangahape Road every day – walking alongside whānau from the street into a home, and staying for the long road after.
What we don’t have is a shared national commitment that outlasts any one government. That’s what this pledge asks for.
The commitment
- Prevent homelessness earlier – invest in tenancy sustainment, whānau and rangatahi support, and pathways before crisis hits.
- Make permanent housing the goal – protect and grow Housing First and access to safe, secure, affordable homes.
- Fund wrap-around support – housing plus sustained support is what produces lasting outcomes.
- Put lived experience at the table – the people who have been through homelessness are the ones who understand ending it.
- Measure progress publicly – a national approach with transparent outcomes, across governments.
A Home for Everyone
Sign the commitment
The 2026 election is our moment to ask this out loud, together. Every signature is a signal to every party that Aotearoa expects better – and expects it to stick.
Thank you for standing with us.
